This kid friendly easy scalloped potatoes recipe is the perfect side dish for cold winter days. Here’s how to make it!

While we usually do hot meals for dinner anyways, casseroles and other baked dishes are the focus of our menu lately, including hearty side dishes to help fill up my growing teens at the end of busy days.
Scalloped potatoes have long been a favorite in my family. My grandmother used to make them regularly for Sunday dinners after church, and my mom carried this tradition on her menu as well.
We’ve got this easy side dish recipe on our menu this week, and I wanted to share how to make it with all of you as a delicious option for dinner for your own family.
Cheesy Easy Scalloped Potatoes Recipe

To make these potatoes as a side dish or as a meal you’ll need potatoes, an onion, flour, salt and pepper, milk, butter, and cheddar cheese.
You can also add parsley for garnish on the top of the potatoes if you wish. You can add in chopped ham as well. Adding ham will make this dish more filling if you’re wanting it serve it as the main dish for your meal.

To get started on this easy scalloped potatoes recipe, you’ll want to preheat your oven to 375 degrees. Wash and peel your potatoes using a vegetable peeler.
Get out a cutting board. You’ll need a sharp knife to chop your potatoes into slices about a 1/4 inch thick slices. A mandolin slicer can also make this easier. You’ll also want to finely chop up your onions.

Using a non-stick cooking spray, spray the sides and the bottom of an 8 x 8 baking dish.
Start placing potatoes in the dish, alternating layers of the potatoes, flour, onions, as well as salt and pepper. If you’re adding ham to this casserole, add it in here as well. Top the layers of potatoes with cubes of butter.

Heat the milk in a saucepan. Once it is close to boiling, remove from the heat. Carefully pour the milk into the casserole dish over the top of the potatoes.

Top the pan with shredded cheese and bake covered for 50 minutes. This dish may bubble over when cooking, so you may want to place a baking sheet or another pan under the casserole dish while baking to catch any drips.
The potatoes in the easy scalloped potatoes recipe should be tender when poked with a fork. Once they are easily pierced when you poke them, you’ll want to uncover the potatoes and bake them an additional 15 minutes until golden brown. You should see top start to bubble and get crispy.

Next, you will want to broil the potatoes for 2 minutes to get the top golden brown. Once you see them start to get crispy, you can remove this easy scalloped potatoes recipe from the oven. Let the potatoes stand for 15 to minutes or until the sauce has a chance to thicken.

- 1/2 medium onion finely chopped
- 4 Tbsp all purpose flour
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 cups whole milk
- 3 Tbsp butter cut into cubes
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 Tbsp chopped parsley for garnish (optional)
- 1 cup diced ham (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. Wash and peel your potatoes using a vegetable peeler.
