5 Easy Ways To Decorate Your Home on a Budget

How to decorate your home on a budget

This post is brought to you by Moshells. All opinions are completely and totally my own.

Ever since getting my first place, I’ve been always been on the lookout for easy and affordable ways to decorate my home on a limited budget. While some of you may consider yourself fashionistas, I probably would fall more into the “decorista” category and used to have my own design scrapbooks and pinboards before Pinterest even existed.

Today with online shopping, finding discount home decor is easier than ever. The web is filled with tons of great ideas and inspiration and it’s easy to compare prices, read reviews and find exactly what you’re looking for. If you’re looking at decorating a new place on limited dollars, or just give a room or two a refresh in 2014, here are some tips.

Work Around Your Room’s Needs

Have large windows? Find some great discount curtains or a cool and funky window treatment that works with the window you have, and then work out from there with some shelves, framed prints, or other wall decor.

Start With a Signature Piece

Much like fashion, home decor for a room can focus around a single piece. Whether it’s as big as a floor rug, or a brightly painted accent wall or as small as a throw pillow, find one item you love to base your design around and then search for complementary pieces that all work together.

Have Fun With Online Deals & Flea Market Finds
Watch clearance sales from online retailers and your favorite in-store merchants for deep discounts on cute items that could become the perfect fit for your room. Don’t hesitate to search flea markets and garage sales for great finds either for items that are new to you. Your friends don’t have to know what you paid and with the additional money you save you can just stretch your budget even further.

Get Daring
Never seen somebody use a piece of furniture or fabric like that before? Then why can’t you? Don’t worry about what everyone else thinks and if it’s what you like–go with it!  If you think that cool old dining room table would make an awesome bed frame with some creative rebuilding, then do it. Take charge and try it out!

Spring Clean and Paint Up
On a really modest budget? Never underestimated what a through cleaning, decluttering and a fresh coat of paint can do. Remove everything from the room, cleaning as you go and then paint. Rearrange the furniture for a fresh look and only put back the items you really need and use regularly. The items your family doesn’t use, consider donating or discarding to get rid of the extra clutter and freeing up space.

  1. Wow this is a great blog layout, and I love the theme. Love this post too, we all need ways to decorate on a budget, especially since it is right after the holidays. Thanks for sharing

  2. I love seeing what people come up with when they redecorate! Sometimes I come up with awesome ideas… other times I look around my house and think “Maybe we’ll try redecorating when the kids are past the age of spitting out milk.”

  3. We have a LOT of redecorating that needs to be done. We bought our home a year ago, but it is almost 100 years old and definitely dated. You can tell that the previous owner was a very old woman. These are some great tips! Thanks!

    • The woman who owned our house was older and had a thing for hideous wallpaper borders. She kept applying one over the top of another when she wanted a change. They were 5 or 6 thick in some rooms and took FOREVER to get off, LOL.

  4. Mary Happymommy says:

Paint makes a HUGE difference. I love using accent pieces to change things up.

  5. These are some great tips! We just moved into a older home we purchased a few months ago. Every room had wall paper. I have removed and painted every room! It looks so much better.. It really does make a difference. I am struggling now with finding stuff to decorate with on a budget. All the curtains I took down cause old lady looking and this house is bigger than any of ours previously. Thanks for the tips I can’t wait to use them and try to find a inspirational piece for each room. Thanks for the help:)

I love going to garage sales and flea markets to find ‘treasures’ for our home!

  8. Tenley Erickson says:

Great tips! We are slowly working on projects on our fixer upper. Paint has made such a huge difference! My next big project is working on some storage. Getting rid of things we don’t need or use and then organizing whats left! Flea Markets and Thrift stores are a great idea to find items that can be repurposed!

  9. David Fultner says:

I looking around and re- purporting can go a long way.
