When I was in elementary and junior high I used to love reading the Ripley’s Believe it or not comics at my grandparents house and the unusual stories, weird facts and bizarre tales always captured my attention and got me reading.
Ripley’s has come a long way since those magazines I read in the 80′s and these days they have some pretty sweet books filled with all the cool info and stories, combined with awesome printing and photography and today’s technology. It’s a treat each year when we get asked to review the latest new Ripley’s Believe it or Not book.
Their latest edition, the brand new annual! Ripley’s Believe it or Not! Dare to Look! is a collection of the weird and extraordinary facts, stories, and features that Ripley’s is known for with thousands of true, yet unbelievable facts, stories and photos from around the world.
In this edition, readers can also access exclusive bonus content through the cool OddScan function of the Ripley’s Believe it or Not! app. For example, by scanning an image of Puggy a Pekingese from Texas with a really long tongue, you’ll get treated to a special video of Puggy licking some ice cream. This way cool app helps make the stories come to life and is a really cool way to merge reading and technology together!
We’ve reviewed several Ripley’s Believe it or Not! books in the past and have always loved them. While my own son is too young, my nephews LOVE these and I always end up buying several copies to give each of them for their upcoming birthdays or Christmas gifts. These books are fun, informative and interesting, and also a way to encourage kids who might be reluctant readers to take an interest in reading and in the world around them. My nephews love the fun facts and funky and sometimes gruesome pictures. While a few might be a bit gross out worthy, everything is totally kid appropriate and as a mom I think these book are a great way to get your kids involved in all the unusual things there are in the world around them — if they Dare to Look!
