As you’re starting to buy school supplies, lunch boxes and back to school snacks for your own children to start classes soon, did you know that many of their classmates, the children of your friends and neighbors are actually going hungry this school year?
Many children don’t have access to healthy foods and snacks and a new partnership called Healthy Snacks For Kids sponsored by Dole through Champions for Kids helps kids in need get some of the nutrition they need to learn and do well in school.
My kids are fruit junkies and Dole Fruit Bowls are on our menu daily at our house, sometimes several times a day. They are easy, healthy kids snacks and my kids couldn’t imagine life without them since they are usually one of the first items on our weekly shopping list. We were excited this past week when we were offered the opportunity to participate in a project that helps kids get some of the fruit nutrition that they need, an we were asked to take trip to our local Walmart to shop for Dole Fruit Bowls and Dole Squish’ems to donate to kids in need in our own community.
My shopping assistants and fruit addicts can spot fruit snacks a mile away and not only quickly found what we needed, but also convinced me to buy extras to replenish our supply at home. (On a side note we also found the packaging quite durable when my 4 year old decided to toss them from the shelf into the cart without asking, LOL)
The first Walmart we stopped at was out of Dole Squish’ems, so we stocked up on lots of fruit bowls to donate to our local food pantry. We were able to get the Dole Squish’ems at another Walmart closer to home.
We’ll be taking our Dole healthy kids snacks to our local food pantry tomorrow to donate. Since we live in a VERY small town where everyone knows everyone we don’t usually show pictures when we make our drop off donations (since those using the pantry don’t really want their photo here on the site), but they are always grateful when stop in to make donations! We’ve also gathered some additional non-perishable items to donate, and asked several of our friends to make donations as well.
Want to help collect some healthy snacks for kids in your community? Here’s how to make a difference, and to DOUBLE your contribution!
It’s this SIMPLE!
1. GATHER your community to collect nutritious back to school snacks!
2. COUNT the number of snacks you collected and take photos!
3. DONATE the snacks you collect to a local school nurse, teacher, socialworker, or food pantry to help children in your community enjoy their first days back to school.
4. DOUBLE your impact by reporting your project at championsforkids.org/share during the month of August 2013. Let us know how many people were involved and how many items you collected, and Dole® will make a matching donation of up to 1,000 Dole Fruit Squish’ems!™ through Champions for Kids to help children in need!
