Ever read the fine print on a coupon and wondered exactly what it meant? If the fine print on a coupon says “limit of one coupon per purchase” this refers to your ability to use one manufacturer coupon or one store per item. If you buy 5 of item X, you can use 5 manufacturer coupons. If you only purchase 1 of item X, you can only use one coupon. Sometimes you might get a cashier who is not coupon friendly that might try to prevent you from using multiple coupons on multiple items. If the cashier says you can’t do this because the coupon says “limit one per purchase”, ask them how many of the item are you purchasing? The manufacturer doesn’t care how many you purchase in one transaction, they just want to limit the number of coupons used per item. If a coupon does say “limit one per transaction”, then you can only purchase one item (and use one coupon) per transaction where you are rung up and pay separately each time.
But I’ve seen people use more than one coupon on an item at some stores. How do they do that?
Most likely they are doing what is called “stacking”. This is where you CAN use a manufacturer coupon with a store coupon on the same item. Many stores such as your local grocery store, Target and Walgreens allow stacking, and this is where you can take advantage of some really big savings! Let’s say you are going to buy some shampoo that is on sale for $3.99. Walgreens has a store coupon in their monthly coupon book for $2 off this shampoo. You also have a manufacturer coupon from the Sunday paper for this same shampoo.
Sale price of shampoo is $3.99
- $2 Walgreens Coupon= $1.99
- $1 Manufacturer Coupon=
$0.99 – Your cost after coupons
Which makes this a great deal. This could even possibly become a moneymaker if there is a savings for a store rewards program like Walgreen’s Balance Rewards, or if you get a catalina coupon back for your next purchase like Register Rewards. This is how extreme coupons can not only get stuff for free, but can even make money shopping! Watch your weekly ads and online shopping blogs like this one for these deals.
