Is your family going to “Wreck-It” this week?
One of the month’s most eagerly anticipated movie releases to blu-ray and DVD hits stores this week and Wreck-It Ralph will now be able to come home with families everywhere. This family friendly film was a contender for best animated film at the recent Oscars and a definite must have for any Disney movie fans. We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to review Wreck-It Ralph here at 2 Kids and a Coupon recently. Here’s a little bit about it!
From Walt Disney Animation Studios and Emmy®-winning director Rich Moore comes “Wreck-It Ralph,” a hilarious, arcade-game-hopping adventure. For decades, Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) has been overshadowed by Fix-It Felix, Jr. (voice of Jack McBrayer), the good-guy star of their game who always gets to save the day. Tired of playing the role of a bad guy, Ralph takes matters into his own massive hands and sets off on a journey across the arcade through multiple generations of video games to prove he’s got what it takes to be a hero.
On his quest, Ralph meets tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Jane Lynch) from the first-person action game Hero’s Duty, and feisty misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman) from the candy-coated cart-racing game Sugar Rush, who may just be his first real friend. But everything changes when a deadly enemy is unleashed, threatening the entire arcade and Vanellope herself. Ralph finally gets his chance to save the day—but can he do it in time? “Wreck-It Ralph” crashes onto the big screen on November 2, 2012, in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.
We saw Wreck-It Ralph in theater and our kids have anxiously been waiting for the release to come out so that we could enjoy it at home too . Our 3 year old regularly runs around the house sporting his imaginary muscles screaming “I’m gonna wreck-it!” and on the days when he’s pretending to be Fix-It Felix, he shoves the big plastic mallets from our whack a mole game into the band on his underwear so that he can have his magic hammers ready at all times. Needless to say this adventure captured the heart and imagination not only of him, but also of his big sister who LOVES Vanellope.
Not unlike Toy Story where the toys have a life of their own when the kids are gone, Wreck-It Ralph covers what happens in the video arcade after hours. With a full behind the scenes imaginative look at what happens in the video games when we’re not playing them, what the characters do when they’re off duty, and the consequences of what happens when they’re outside their games. They even have a Game Central Station and characters who are panhandling because their games have been unplugged and they no longer have a home.

There’s some nice throw back mentions, cameos and inclusions to some of our old favorite video games from years past which the youngsters will miss, but the story is great and imaginative, with a cool variety of scenes and characters. Even if you don’t know your old video games you won’t be lost and you’ll still enjoy the story.
We particularly liked the bad guys support group, and my kids now want to see what really happens when you drop Mentos in my diet soda (see the movie & you’ll understand!)
From a mom’s perspective, one of the things I love about this movie is that the humor is clean and family friendly. Unfortunately these days some “kids movies” aren’t always appropriate for kids. There is some toddler level trash talk as Ralph and Vanellope bond and become friends and a little bit of gross out humor that really just got a few snickers out of my crew. Everything was totally kid-friendly and appropriate and both my 3 year old and 8 year old have watched it several times already.Even the few fight scenes weren’t scary or violent and this film is definitely one to add to your family’s film collection.

Disclosure: I attended a blogger event for purposes of covering this movie and event. However all opinions expressed are my own and our family LOVED Wreck-It Ralph!

We never made it to the theater to see this when it first came out, but I have a feeling that the Easter Bunny is going to be bringing the boys a copy of this for Easter this year!
