These days, it seems like everything is going interactive. Even our books have gone interactive as apps as we use our tablets and Kindles so I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise that toys are also taking to the same level.
We recently had the opportunity to check out one of the hottest toys of the season that helps take the ages old past time of coloring to the next level as well with Crayola’s Digital Light Designer. This cool new toy takes coloring to an interactive level. Just in case you haven’t seen this toy yet in person or in action, here’s a description:
For the first time, kids can create with colored LEDs on a 360-degree domed drawing surface. Three different modes let kids create dynamic free-hand drawings, activate amazing animations and have hours of fun playing interactive drawing games. Using the digital light stylus, kids can select colors and line width to begin free-drawing anywhere on the domed surface. Extending the fun even more, the Digital Light Designer also comes with 8 different interactive games and activity apps!

We’ve had a lot of fun playing and testing out Crayola’s Digital Light Designer the last couple weeks and I can see why this toy is creating such a buzz this holiday season. This is definitely a fun way to bring kids doodling creations to life. The light up colors got them super excited and brought a fun new interactive component to their normal coloring and doodles. The graphics with this toy aren’t super high tech, but my kids didn’t seem to mind and they had a lot of fun drawing wth the lights. At ages 3 and 8, they had the most fun just drawing randomly on it and doodling, where older kids might have more fun with the mazes and animation.
This toy is lots of fun, but did take a little bit of figuring out to get it going. It takes some reading of the instructions and working with it to get the hang of it. It took us a little while to get it to work on the different features. If you’re planning on giving it to younger kids for the holiday, I’d recommend opening it up ahead of time and getting it ready to use and get familiar with it so that you can help them use it right away. It will help keep them from being impatient and give them a chance to jump in and play ASAP. This does require lots of batteries which are not included so you’ll want to have those on hand for initial use as well as extras continued use, or purchase a plug-in power adapter separately.
