So what does my 3 year old know about dieting? More than you might think!
Since December, I’ve lost 47 pounds on Nutrisystem and it’s not only teaching me better how to eat myself, but also how to feed my family. As we’re making better choices together on our eating and exercise, the kids are also teaching me about healthy eating in their own way.
My little guy, once a 4 pound premie is now a huge lanky toddler, a head taller than the other kids in his class. He’s a lean mean trouble machine, but as he’s tackling solids and I’m teaching him to eat healthy, he’s also teaching me a thing or two as well. Here’s what I’m learning from him.
Eat only till your tummy is full.
My little man can pack away food like there is no tomorrow, but he will also be the first to admit when he is full. He puts down his fork, and moves on to a new activity. One of my dieting pitfalls is portion control. I for some reason have trouble hearing that signal that tells me to stop eating. I need to learn better to listen to my stomach’s queues and know when my own tummy is full. Until then, I’m watching portions to help monitor what I’m eating.
Dessert is OK.
Dessert and treats are Ok in moderation, we just have to know to limit ourselves. We don’t have to eat the whole thing just because it’s there. Besides the real fun is in the first few bites anyway… well that and making a mess for Mom to clean up.
I need some green, Mom.
One of the tricks I’ve learned to help get my picky eaters to eat is to let them help decide where the food goes on their plate. I read somewhere online that if the food is aesthetically pleasing to their toddler minds, then they are more inclined to eat it. We also use this trick to introduce new foods by getting them to balance colors on the plate. If their plate has too much white (like from bread or carbs) we encourage them to balance out the colors with greens, yellows, orange and etc. (usually vegetables). It works nearly every time and my kids are one of the few on our block asking for peas with their supper.
Girls can eat fruit too.
This weekend during a picnic with my toddler, he gave me the realization that maybe I’m not always setting the best eating example. Although only 3, he asked me if I liked fruit. When I told him yes, he said that girls don’t eat fruit. When I told him that we do indeed like it and eat it, he pointed out that I don’t usually eat it when he does. The truth is, while I give my kids servings of fruits and vegetables at every meal, sometimes I forget to take them for myself. Not only is it important for my own health, but it’s important to set an example and show my kids that girls do indeed like fruit.
No snacks before dinner.
I admit I’m a snacker, and so are my kids. And when we get home from work and school we’re usually STARVING. It’s tough to make everyone wait to eat while I cook a healthy option and probably more often than I would like, we break into a snack before dinner. Not only is it not the always the healthiest snack, but it also kills our appetites for the good stuff too. Instead I’m trying hard to have healthy, but easy to prepare meal options that can be ready soon after we walk in the door and when snacks are required — I’m keeping better options on hand for all of us.
