Whether you’re considering making the cut to just one income in your household, or just looking for ways to save money with the income(s) you have, a new book called Ditch the Joneses, Discover Your Family: How to Thrive on Less Than Two Incomes! by Cathi Brese Doebler is a great read for anyone looking to be smarter about your spending and stretch your family’s budget.

I had the opportunity to preview Ditch the Joneses recently and this friendly book was easy read, easy to follow, and contained a lot of great ideas. While our household is a two-income household, lots of unexpected expenses and a job loss with extended unemployment in the last couple of years have caused us to rethink the way we were spending our money. We started being smarter about our expenses, and as a result, we are more financially secure, even with more expenses and a new (and very energetic!) addition to our family. Ditch the Joneses, Discover Your Family reinforced a lot of the practices we have already implemented (such as using coupons) and gave me lots of additional ideas on things I hadn’t even thought of.

Ditch the Joneses, Discover Your Family offers some great suggestions and forces readers to think about some tough questions while looking at the finances for their family like “Do you really need two vehicles?” or “Do you really need cable TV?” and easily walks readers through the things you need to consider when making the enormous decision about having you or your spouse stay home. My favorite was the Ways to Save section which breaks down spending into easy categories.

This book is written from the Christian perspective, which I realize is not always right for everyone, and there are sections after each chapter with guidance and prayer ideas. Even if this is not your thing, this book is still packed with support and suggestions for how to help your family thrive on less, and the small purchase price is worth the large savings you’ll see even if you only implement a few of the author’s ideas.
