#MyBlogSpark – Get More Whole Grains in Your Diet + #Win 5 Boxes of General Mills Cereal!

Is one of your New Year’s resolutions for you and your family to eat better? If you’re like our family, you’ve been paying closer attention to labels the last few weeks, and looking for healthier options including whole grains.
It can be tough when you’re grocery shopping, to easily identify whole grain products, especially as a parent when you have your little distractions in your cart or trying to run around the store “helping you”. One new and important change that will help make this easier is some new labeling on cereal. While shopping, just look for boxes with a big white check mark on the front. This identifies that this cereal has more whole grain than any other single ingredient with the same great taste. You will see “whole grain” as a part of the first ingredient on the ingredient list, indicating that whole grain is the first and most prevalent ingredient.

According to Dr. Travis Stork, emergency room physician and host of “The Doctors,” identifying whole grain products can be challenging. Shoppers can look for nutritional cues on the front of the box, but they need to read the ingredient list to know if they are getting enough whole grain. Ingredient lists detail ingredients in order of prevalence, and if the words “whole grain” are followed by a grain like wheat or oats, it means the food contains more whole grain than any other single ingredient. Here´s how to determine if your cereals have whole grain as a first ingredient. Here are some of his tips for to include whole grain easily into your diet.

Start Early!
The Dietary Guidelines recommend people get at least 48 grams of whole grain in their daily diets. Get a jump-start on the day´s nutrition by incorporating whole grain into your morning routine. For instance, when choosing cereal make sure whole grain is listed as the first ingredient. One easy choice is cereal with the white check, which have more whole grain than any other single ingredient.

Make Simple Swaps.

Choose whole grain versions of the foods you love. Great options include whole wheat pasta and whole wheat bread or even whole grain crackers. Also, try different types of whole grain. Use brown rice instead of white rice as a side dish at dinner or popcorn, which is a whole grain, for a snack.

Don´t Judge a Food by Its Cover.

The front of food packages provide good nutritional cues, but don´t forget to read the ingredients and check the nutrition label and side labels for additional health information. Cereals with the white check even include the amount of whole grain per serving on packaging.
Having this new white check on the boxes is an handy and easier identifier, and I love that some of our families favorite cereals are participating!
To help with choosing products with whole grain, General Mills developed “Fast Lane for Whole Grain,” an online educational game. Consumers can navigate virtual grocery store aisles and identify products that have whole grain as the first ingredient, with the option to enter a sweepstakes to win one of each of the 50 cereals with the white check including Cheerios®, Lucky Charms®, Cinnamon Toast Crunch®, Honey Nut Cheerios® and Total®. For more information on the importance of whole grain and a chance to enter the “Fast Lane for Whole Grain” sweepstakes, visit http://bit.ly/WholeGrain1st.

To help you with your goals to eat healthier this year, one lucky 2 Kids and a Coupon reader is going to win 5 boxes of General Mills Cereal with the white check that shows they have whole grains as the primary ingredient. See below for how to enter!

Watch Staples for Hot Unmarked Deals on Vtech Mobigo & eBook Readers! Saved $117!

You may have noticed I was away much of the day today. I hit the road for some bargain shopping with my aunt and mom, and scored some great deals today at several locations. One of my hottest savings were unadvertised, and not even marked at clearance prices, but fortunately I knew to check from a reader’s tip!

If you’re near a Staples store this weekend, check end caps for their Vtech learning systems. I was able to score one Mobigo Vtech Learning Touch System and one Vtech Animated e-Book system and 7 games/books for rock bottom prices. The readers (currently selling on Amazon for between $32 and $39) were just $14.50 and the games (normally $15) were just $5.50. I was able to get the 2 systems and 7 games shown above for $72, and also used my Staples Rewards card & coupon to save an extra $20 making all of this just $52 including sales tax– a savings of $117 over normal retail prices if I had bought the same items on Amazon! I’ll be putting these up for the kids birthdays in a few months and my mom got one for one of my nephews as well.

Now it’s important to note, that this super hot sale price is not marked, the readers were marked $38, and the games $11. If your Staples has these, ask a clerk to scan and check the price for you before ringing these up to make sure they’re on sale.

Not all Staples have these in stock and they are disappearing fast. If you’re on the lookout for one, you may want to call ahead and ask them to hold one. We found them at 2 out of 3 Staples today. I had to get my little man a pink Mobigo, but he won’t mind!

Thanks Sasha!
